And what if you didn’t know why? What if everything you thought you knew about yourself was wrong?Cyberpunk vs Steampunk: a dystopian post-apocalyptic adventure for MG/YA crossoverOne thousand years have passed since nuclear war wiped out civilization in the northern hemisphere. The planet slowly heats and water becomes a rare resource. Out of the ruins of a devastated civilization rises a new breed of people – those with the power to control magnetism. TeslasSebastian, a young orphan boy from a quiet rural town, is being hunted by strange part-machine, part-human people. His only hope is Melanie, an angry, dying teenage girl who is dragged into the adventure and sets out to deliver him to the Steam Academy, even if it’s just to stop him talking. Seb must confront an unknown past and fight against everything he believed in. And occasionally wash his hair.No one said it would be easy. The adventure continues in the multi award-winning book 2 of the Tesla Evolution, DECAY.Interview with the AuthorQ: Who is supposed to read this thing? If you’re smart, good-looking, and generally awesome then this is for you!! It is written for the MG/YA crossover market, and as though the main character had written it. As the characters evolve, the writing evolves with them. We start off simple then increase the complexity over the series.Q: You know, teenagers don’t act like this. That’s not really a question, but yes, they do! In real life, this is how they talk. Even though it is a teen book, it is written about them as if they had written it, not down to them.Q: They don’t. It’s as simple as that. That’s even less of a question.Q: Don’t we have enough of this Apocalypse stuff?Probably.Q: That’s not much of an answer.Very well, yes there’s heaps of very successful titles already out in this style. I’ve tried to add something new to the oeuvre, while also paying a bit of an homage to what has already been. But I’ve taken the concepts of Electro-Magnetic theory and asked: How far can I push the concept while still having it grounded in science? — what if?Q: What’s up with the weird scene changes?I observed how teens were watching movies and playing games (like Assassins’ Creed), and examined how narrative was presented in these mediums. I wanted to capture the kind of urgency you get in cut-scenes. Everything is stripped back to the bare story. No messing around. Hence the adrenaline rush tag.Q: So how do I classify this book?Well, it’s a genre mash-up so it can easily fit within many categories:- Cyberpunk Adventure- Dystopian YA- Steampunk Adventure- Science Fiction Action Adventure- Humorous and ThrillingBut at its heart it’s a sci-fi adventure, a simple story about a boy who only wants to get his mom back. And save the universe without the curse of eating vegetables.Q: Too right on the vegetables.Yes, that is a running gag that goes through all of the books.Q: Oh, God, no! There’s more?Yes, the journey has only just begun. Much like Lord of the Rings–Q: Comparing yourself to Tolkien now?Of course not, all I’m trying to say that Tesla (like the Hobbit) is a lighthearted opening to a much darker story. Decay, Faraday and Fusion are like the three Lord of the Rings titles, much darker and written for an older reader. But I’m not, and let me be very clear about this, comparing it to Lord of the Rings.
